Origin: River basins in Southeast Asia, including the Mekong and Chao Phraya, as well as Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo

Size: Grows up to 60 to 90 cm (2 to 3 feet) in length and can weigh up to 7 kg

Lifespan: 10 to 15 years with proper care

Temperament: Semi-aggressive to aggressive; highly territorial, especially as adults

Diet: Omnivore; feeds on sinking pellets, algae, plant matter, and small crustaceans.

Aquarium Care Requirements

While juveniles are often sold small in pet shops, they outgrow standard community tanks quickly and are best suited for experienced hobbyists.

Minimum Tank Size 400–475 litres (125+ gallons) for an adult.

Water Temperature 22–28°C (72–82°F)

pH Range 6.0–7.5

Substrate Fine sand or smooth gravel for foraging

Care and Behavior Tips

Tank Mates: Best kept alone or with large, robust, fast-swimming fish (such as large barbs or South American cichlids) that can handle their territorial behavior. Do not house them with delicate or nano fish.

Live Plants: Not recommended for heavily planted tanks, as Black Sharks will readily consume plant leaves and uproot vegetation.

Tank Cover: A secure lid or hood is essential because they are powerful and active jumpers.
