Key Facts and Appearance
- Size: Grows up to 2.5 to 2.75 inches (6–7 cm) in length, making them larger and stockier than many common tetra species.
- Coloration: Features a reflective silvery-gray body with a striking iridescent blue sheen and vivid red or orange fins (including a bright red adipose fin).
- Lifespan: Typically lives for 3 to 5 years with proper care.
- Temperament: Active and semi-aggressive; they can be fin-nippers toward slow-moving or long-finned tankmates and display mild spats within their own group.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons (approx. 75+ liters) to comfortably house an active school.
- Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature of 22–28°C (72–82°F) and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 in soft to moderately hard water.
- Environment: Thrives in heavily planted aquariums with driftwood, dark substrate, and plenty of open swimming space.
- Social Needs: Must be kept in a school of at least 6 to 8 individuals (ideally 10+) to spread out social hierarchies and minimize fin-nipping.
- Diet: Omnivorous; they eagerly accept high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and live or frozen supplements like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
