Echinodorus Rose

Echinodorus 'Rosé' (commonly known as the Rose Sword) is a popular, hard-working hybrid aquarium plant renowned for its striking underwater color transformation. First cultivated in Germany in 1986, this cross between Echinodorus horemanii 'Red' and Echinodorus horizontalis is highly favored by both beginners and experts for its low maintenance needs and vibrant aesthetic.

Key Characteristics & Appearance

Dynamic Foliage: When grown above water (emersed), the leaves look standard green. Once submerged, its new central leaves emerge in a beautiful, bright pink to bronze-red shade, often decorated with small red-brown spots. As the leaves age, they gradually mature into a deep, rich forest green.

Size & Placement:

The plant typically grows between 25 to 40 cm tall with a rosette spread of 15 to 25 cm. Because of its broad, bold shape, it makes an excellent center piece midground or background focal point in medium to large aquariums.

Care and Aquarium Requirements

Substrate Requirements: Like almost all Amazon Swords, the Rose Sword is a heavy root feeder. It requires a deep, nutrient-dense gravel/soil setup or regular feeding with root tab fertilizers tucked beneath its base to prevent leaf fading and melting.

Lighting Preferences: It adapts well to low or moderate aquarium lighting. However, providing higher light intensity will significantly boost and retain its signature bright pink leaf coloration.

Parameters: It thrives in a temperature range of 22–30°C, with a stable pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. Supplementing the tank with carbon dioxide (CO2) isn't strictly necessary, but it will noticeably accelerate its growth rate.
