The striped kyathit danio (Danio kyathit or orange-finned danio) is a small, active freshwater fish native to the upper Irrawaddy River in Northern Myanmar.
Key Characteristics
- Size: Grows to about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.5 to 5 cm).
- Appearance: Features 5 to 7 dark horizontal stripes (which can sometimes break into spots or a leopard pattern) over a silver-gold body with a warm copper glow. Males develop vibrant orange-red fins, while females are stockier with clearer fins.
- Behavior: Peaceful, schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 individuals. They make great dither fish in community tanks with small, peaceful tankmates.
Aquarium Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of 75 to 81 litres for a small school.
- Water Temperature: 16°C to 26°C (61°F to 79°F).
- Water Parameters: pH 6.0 to 7.8; water hardness 2 to 15 dGH.
- Tank Setup: Prefers a river-style or planted setup with moderate water flow, dark substrate to enhance coloration, and a tight-fitting lid because they are active jumpers.
- Diet: Omnivorous; accepts flakes, micro-pellets, daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.
